Seafood Galore: Phil's Fish Market

Phil's Fish MarketHello again! Just wanted to do a quick review and blog about Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing, Ca.  Over the President's Day weekend, my boyfriend and I planned a trip out to Monterey, Ca, to enjoy some fresh air, amazing scenery and of course great food.  We usually grab a quick bite at the Old Fisherman's Grotto; a sourdough bowl and their famous clam chowder (I love it there, in my opinion it is the best on the Wharf), but this time I wanted to try something new.  I absolutely love seafood, so before my trip I searched online for the "best" seafood restaurant in Monterey...and Phil's Fish Market came up.  After reading a couple reviews I was sold, and decided that I would give Phil's a try.

Getting to the restaurant was not too bad because it was not too far from where we were heading anyways. However, finding Phil's was a bit tricky once we exited off the highway; there are no signs screaming out "Phil's This Way -->."  Fortunately there was a swarm of cars so we joined the caravan.

We arrived at Phil's at about 2 pm and it was a mad house, completely packed.  Tons of people and barely enough seats to hold us all.  Luckily, it did not take us too long to get to the front of the line, and the wait gave us just enough time to pick out what we wanted to order.  I ordered their famous Cioppino, and my boyfriend ordered a 3 item combo from the fryer (squid, shrimp and oysters).

It took quite a while for our food to come, which gave me a good opportunity to enjoy the open and airy ambiance that the restaurant had to offer.  When you enter the restaurant you are greeted with a decent sized bar and wonderful little fish market.  If you can't find a seat inside, you can wander to the back of the restaurant, grab a seat outside and get a refreshing ocean view =)

Finally (30+ minutes later), we got our food...the Cioppino came out piping hot with generous portions of crab, scallops, and mussels, a slice of toasty garlic bread and a crisp green salad.  My boyfriend's combo plate was fresh, fried, and crispy.  All the seafood was sooooo FRESH and worth the wait, it definitely fulfilled my seafood craving.

Even though the food is a bit pricey (what seafood isn't? lol), the restaurant is crowded, and it did take quite a while for us to get our food, I totally recommend Phil's Fish Market.  If you are in the area, stop by and check it out, you will NOT be disappointed.  If you can't make it over to the restaurant, but you are dying to try their delicious Cioppino, check out their online store.

It was amazing experience and I would definitely do it again =)

BBQ Ribs and Steak

Hello everyone. I just wanted to share this BBQ recipe with you. Nothing too fancy, but it is an easy recipe and is packed with a lot of flavor.  In this recipe I used beef (flat iron steak and ribs), but it can be used on beef or, chicken or even turkey. Also, the marinade that I used is semi-homemade; because I used a store bought BBQ sauce a lot of the work was cut out for me.

The story behind the sauce: One of my co-workers recommended Everett and Jones Restaurant (Bay Area in California) to me and I decided to check it out. I ordered a combo and got ribs and brisket.  I immediately fell in love with the BBQ, especially the sauce and OMG the brisket is to die for. The meat was so tender and smokey; and the sauce was a great compliment to it. If you are in Northern California, around the Bay Area you should definitely check out this BBQ spot.

I later found out that you can purchase Everett and Jones BBQ sauce in some grocery stores (i.e. Safeway, Lucky's). Since then I have been craving Everett and Jones's BBQ, hence the reason to recreate the experience at home for my family to enjoy. In no way is this a dupe for the amazing food at Everett and Jones's, but it is a way to bring a piece of the restaurant home with you =)

BBQ Beef Ribs/Steak Recipe

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup Onions (Diced)
  • 3 tbsp Garlic (Minced)
  • 1 - 2 lbs Beef flat iron steak or flank steak
  • 1 - 2 lbs Beef ribs
  • 3 - 4 cups BBQ sauce (I used Everett and Jones BBQ sauce in Mild)
  • 2 -4 tbsp Extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Dice onions, mince garlic and set aside.
  2. Drizzle olive oil on to both sides of the meat.
  3. Add salt and pepper to both sides of the ribs and the steak and set aside.
  4. To make marinade add BBQ sauce, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and onions in a large bowl.
  5. Take about 1 cup of this marinade and set it aside to use for basting .
  6. Place the beef and ribs to the bowl, cover and marinade for at least 2+ hours in the refrigerator.
  7. Once the meat is marinaded, it can be grilled, broiled or baked.  In this recipe I will be baking the meat.  Pre-heat the oven to 300 degrees.
  8. Obtain a roaster pan and spray the rack with non-stick cooking spray.
  9. Place the ribs and steak on to the rack and bake for 1 to 2 hours (depending on the preferred doneness of the meat).
  10. Baste and turn the meat about every 15 to 20 minutes.
  11. During the last 5 to 10 minutes of the cooking process turn the oven up to 400 degrees.
  12. Let the meat rest before carving. Cover the meat with aluminum foil for about 10 minutes.
  13. Carve the meat and enjoy!

Le Village Buffet, Las Vegas

Le Village Buffet
Entrance to the Le Village Buffet
When you think of Las Vegas what comes to mind? Casinos, show-girls, and clubs are the top few choices that you would think of, right?  One of the things that usually comes to my mind is FOOD!!! especially the buffets.  How can you visit Vegas with out stopping by a buffet or two? lol it is truly a smorgasbord of all types of food (no matter which buffet you visit).

Last January I took a trip to Vegas and decided to hit-up the buffet in the Paris Hotel and Casino, Le Village Buffet.  The ambiance and decor of this buffet is so darn cute =).  I was at the buffet during brunch time, so I experienced their breakfast/lunch menu.  The Le Village Buffet offered foods inspired by the flavors from France, Asia, the Mediterranean and more.  One of the best features of this buffet is the dessert bar.  So many delicious pastries; i.e. creme brulee, pear tarts, flan, cakes and cookies.  Overall, I truly enjoyed all of the French inspired food and the AMAZING dessert bar that Le Village Buffet.

Cooking Fun!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to upload a couple of pictures of the projects that I have been working on this week.  It is not much, but I am trying out a couple of new recipes to see if they pass my taste test lol.

So....I am obsessed with searching for the recipes of dishes that I have fallen in love with.  Some of these recipes are from dishes that I have had at restaurants that I find dupes for; and some recipes are just classic recipes with my own spin on it.

What I would like to do on this blog is post recipes that I absolutely love and hold dear to my heart =)  Usually, this means that these recipes have passed a series of tests...lol.  Here are some of the things I look for in a dish:

1)  Do I like/love the dish?
Which means that it tastes AMAZING =)  (according to me at least haha)

2)  Is it a crowd pleaser?
I tend to cook for the masses and it is always a plus if you can grab the crowds attention by
          tantalizing their taste buds.

3) Other factors -
          Don't get me wrong, I would love to cook like a gourmet chef at home on a daily basis;
unfortunately this is quite impossible with the work and school schedule that I have.  So anything
that is easy to prepare and is yummy in the tummy will definitely be part of my menu ;D
